Description

In pressurized water reactors, the use of high strength low alloy steel threaded fasteners is widespread in closures of primary, auxiliary, safety and other systems which contain borated water. The majority of installed fasteners have performed without incident. However, there have been a number of incidents in which severe degradation of fasteners occured as a result of exposure to borated water. This paper presents the results of a survey of borated water corrosion of low alloy steel fasteners in US PWR applications and the results of borated water corrosion laboratory tests of fastener materials
