Sensitive method of continuous air monitoring for 14C and 3H
Description
14C and tritium are separated from each other in the sampling step. Moreover, a differentiation between tritiated water vapor (HTO), 14CO2 and other airborne substances labeled with isotopes is brought about by a catalytic reaction using CuO at 6000C. Tritium occurs as an aqueous sample, 14C as Na214CO3. The radioactivity is measured in the scintillation spectrometer. For tritium this technique has a limit of detection of 0.8 pCi/m3 of air, for 14C of 0.6 pCi/m3 of air. These levels correspond to 15 to 30% of the mean background concentration presently observed for HTO and 14CO2. For tritium an additional background of, on the average, 3.3 pCi/m3 of air is observed which can be traced mainly to tritiated atmospheric hydrogen (HT). (orig./HP)

Die beiden Radionuklide werden bei der Probennahme voneinander abgetrennt. Durch katalytische Reaktion ueber CuO bei 6000C wird ausserdem eine Differenzierung zwischen tritiiertem Luftwasserdampf (HTO), 14CO2 und anderen in der Luft enthaltenen isotopisch markierten Substanzen erreicht. Tritium faellt als Wasserprobe an, C-14 als Na214CO3. Die Radioaktivitaetsmessung erfolgt im Szintillationsspektrometer. Fuer Tritium besitzt dieses Verfahren eine Nachweisgrenze von 0,8 pCi/m3 Luft, fuer C-14 von 0,6 pCi/m3 Luft. Diese Werte entsprechen 15 bis 30% der z.Z. beobachteten mittleren Untergrundkonzentration fuer HTO und 14CO2. (orig./HP)Additional details
