  • 1. Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (Ukraine)

Description

The study of leukemia in Chernobyl accident clean-up workers was carried out based on the data of the Ukrainian State Registry of the persons, who suffered from Chernobyl incident and on information, provided by local medical institutions. During the period of observation (1987-1996) 48 cases of the acute and chronic leukemia in liquidators of 1986, and 15 cases in liquidators of 1987 were collected. Annual and age-specific leukemia incidence rates have been calculated. Based on the SRR analysis, the tendency of leukemia incidence increase was determined in emergency workers participated clean-up activity in 1986. The most meaningful rise is observed in 3-5 years after irradiation when the SRR is of 4,86 (95% CI: 1,15-20,52). (author)
