Reactor physics can be defined as the study of the behaviour of free neutrons in whether or not multiplying media and of all attributes of, and phenomena in those media which are related to the neutron behaviour. In this contribution the development of reactor physics in the past fifty years, the actual situation and eventual future developments are outlined. 11 refs.; 4 figs
