ACTH radioimmunoassay in the rabbit: relationships between plasma ACTH response to stress, corticosteroids and diarrhea

Plasma ACTH was measured in young and adult rabbits with a CEA-SORIN kit. The reliability of the analysis was controlled by liquid chromatography, several biochemical tests such as parallelism and reproducibility and several physiological tests such as plasma ACTH response to ethylic ether stress, to adrenalectomy, to dexamethasone and metopyrone. In young diarrhoeic rabbit plasma, ACTH (293+-45 pg/ml) and corticosteroid (111+-13 ng/ml) levels were significantly much higher than in young healthy rabbits (ACTH: 130+-35 pg/ml; corticosteroids: 66+-7 ng/ml). Furthermore, transporting young rabbits by car caused such violent stress that plasma ACTH levels increased from 52+-11 to 130+-35 pg/ml. A causal relationship between stress - ACTH and diarrhoea is discussed

Abstract (French)

L'ACTH plasmatique a ete dose chez des lapereaux et des lapins adultes au moyen de la trousse CEA-SORIN. La validite de l'analyse a ete estimee par chromatographie liquide, plusieurs tests biochimiques tels que parallelisme et reproductibilite et plusieurs tests physiologiques tels que la reponse de l'ACTH plasmatique au stress a l'ether ethylique, a la surrenalectomie, a la dexamethasone et a la metopirone. Dans le plasma de lapereaux diarrheiques les niveaux d'ACTH (293+-45 pg/ml) et de corticosteroides (111+-13 ng/ml) etaient significativement plus eleves que chez les lapereaux sains (ACTH: 130+-35 pg/ml); corticosteroides: 66+-7 ng/ml). Par ailleurs, le transport routier des lapereaux a provoque un stress si violent que le niveau d'ACTH du plasma a augmente de 52+-11 a 130+-35 pg/ml. Une relation causale stress-ACTH et diarrhee a ete discutee
