Description
The Moessbauer isomer shifts for 119Sn atoms in pure metals and some binary alloys and intermetallic compounds have been measured. The main feature governing the behaviour of the Sn isomer shift in metallic systems, is that of locality which reflects the crucial significance of the local-environment effects. For Sn impurity atoms in the pure metals a linear correlation was found between the isomer shifts and the φm matrix electronegativities. The sharp diminution in the dependence of isomer shift on φm in the transition metals is governed by s-d hybridization. Non-linear behaviour of the isomer shift in binary alloys has been interpreted in terms of a simple model, in which a spatial non-uniformity of the electron density is taken into account. The interrelation of these results and the magnetic hyperfine interaction for Sn atoms in the metallic magnetics is discussed
