Development of a volume produced H/sup -/ ion source

  • 1. Div. of Thermonuclear Fusion Research, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Naka-machi, Naka-gun, Ibaraki-ken

Description

Using two types of multipole plasma sources, the authors have tried to increase the current density of volume produced H/sup -/ ion beams at lower operating pressures. One source has a cylindrical, high magnetic field, large volume discharge chamber, where the plasma confinement is extremely good. The other is a medium size, rectangular plasma source equipped with a strong magnetic filter. It was found that not only the low electron temperature but the high ratio of the molecular ion component in the plasma are necessary to enhance the H/sup -/ ion yield. These conditions are satisfied in the latter source. At an optimum magnetic filter configuration, the source produced a 15 mA/cm/sup 2/ H/sup -/ ion beam for 0.2 sec with the beam energy of 10 keV at the low pressure of 0.7 Pa
