Description
An external electric field and resulting forced diffusion are investigated as to their importance as a transport mechanism of radionuclides as vapor near a high-level waste (HLW) repository. An electric field can be generated by radioactive decay of high-level waste. Two cases are considered: a canister located in a rock mass and a canister located in air. Substantial electric fields and ion drift velocities are predicted in air using a computer model. The electric field in a rock mass is considerably less than in air. Values for ionic density must be determined before the significance of forced diffusion can be ascertained. The electric field caused by a HLW canister may also be important in other coupled transport processes
