Surface oxidation of Fe/sub 40/Ni/sub 40/B/sub 20/ metallic glass
- 1. Dept. of Physics, Univ. of Poona, Pune 411007
Description
The metallic glass sample of Fe/sub 40/Ni/sub 40/B/sub 20/ has been studied for its electronic structure as well as oxidation behaviour at 300K, 470K and 670K. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Ultra Violet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) have been used for this. The results indicate that a broad maximum in the density of states appears near the Fermi level, which shifts to the high binding energy side on annealing. Oxygen does not interact strongly with iron and nickel (except that at a surface layer of one to two atomic layers) at any temperatures investigated here. Oxygen mostly dissolves into the lattice except that at 670K it interacts with boron to partially convert it into boron oxide
