Extraction of europium(III) from phosphoric acid solutions by 8-hydroxyquinoline and Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and their mixtures

Description
The extraction of Eu(III) by 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ), di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (HDEHP) and their mixtures in benzene from phosphoric acid solutions is investigated. The stoichiometry of the extracted species is found to be Eu(DEHP)3.(HDEHP)3, Eu.H2PO4(Q)2 and Eu.H2PO4.(Q)2.3(HDEHP)2 for the extraction of Eu(III) by HDEHP, HQ and HDEHP-HQ mixtures, alternatively. The respective extraction constants, K30, K20 and K23 and the formation constant B23, are calculated. The thermodynamic values of the investigated reactions are determined and discussed. (orig.)
