Recent advances in the radiolysis of aqueous systems

  • 1. Tokyo Metropolitan Isotope Research Center, Tokyo (Japan)

Description

Recently it has been shown that a second reducing species, the hydrated electron, plays a dominant role in the radiolysis of neutral and alkaline solutions. A review is given concerning (1) a more complete characterization of the primary species and reactions, (2) determination of chemical yields, and (3) measurement of the absolute reaction rate constants of the hydrated electron, which are the branches where the most impressive advances have been made in aqueous radiation chemistry.
