Radon monitoring in Finnish mines

  • 1. Institute of Radiation Protection, Helsinki (Finland)

Description

Radon monitoring in Finnish non-uranium mines has been carried out in three stages. In the first survey in 1972-74 some places were found in which it was considered necessary to reduce the amount of radon. The second survey in 1975-77 investigated the success of measures to reduce the amount of radon and estimated the average annual exposure to radon daughter products in each mine. These estimates vary from less than 0.2 WLM/a to 1.6 WLM/a, the national average for all 1368 miners in 1976 being 0.40 WLM/a. The third stage, currently in progress, involves individual assessment of the exposure in certain mines by recording the number of hours worked in each place
