Evaluation of the weathered Japanese roof tiles of Himeji Castle (3). Elemental mapping of the surface carbon films by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Description
Japanese roof tiles weathered for 50 years on Himeji Castle have been evaluated by elemental mapping in the C K, O K, Ca L, and Fe L regions by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. From the C K-mapping, it can be found that carbon films coated on the roof tiles were partially peeled off by weathering. The O K-mapping revealed the oxidation of the carbon films. From the Fe L-mapping, it can be confirmed that Fe oxides partially exist on the oxidized carbon films. This suggests that the Fe oxides can appear from the sintered clay base layers through pinholes or small peeled area of carbon films. (author)
Abstract (Japanese)
昭和の大修理から平成の大修理にいたる約 50 年間で風化した姫路城いぶし瓦について,表面炭素膜の劣化状態を放射光軟 X線吸収分光のマッピング測定で評価した.C K端でのマッピングから,風雨日照に曝されると炭素膜は部分的に剥離し,その分布は不均ーになることがわかった.O K端のマッピングから風化で不均一に分布する炭素は酸化されることを確認でき,さらに Fe L 端のマッピングから Fe 酸化物が点在することを明らかにした.これから,風化によって酸化された炭素膜に形成される微小な孔あるいは剥離個所を通って,粘土素地の Fe 酸化物が表面に析出すると考えられる.(著者)Additional details
