Double beta decay and nuclear structure

Description

The decay rate of the 2 nu double beta decay is calculated as a test of our understanding of the nuclear structure problems involved. The effects of pairing, static quadrupole deformation, spin-isospin polarization, and the Δ isobar admixtures are analyzed. The calculation, which is parameter free, predicts a faster decay rate than has been observed experimentally in 82Se, 130Te, and 150Nd. 4 refs., 3 figs., t tab
