Flipping neutrons
Description
A neutron scattering technique at the Australian Atomic Energy Commission's HIFAR research reactor is described. LONGPOL, the long wavelength polarisation analysis instrument, polarises the neutron beam and analyses the scattered intensity to determine what fraction of scattered neutrons are oriented antiparallel rather than parallel to the magnetic field. Applications include magnetic materials studies and studies of vibrations in solids and liquids. Results of a study on the effect of nickel impurities on the magnetism of manganese are presented. LONGPOL in its present form is an interim instrument - plans for a new instrument are outlined
