HTA-project development work for high temperature reactor plants. Survey of the programme of work at the KFA for developing high-temperature reactor systems 1984

The HTA Project combines all activities performed at the KFA for the development of high-temperature reactor systems. These do not include work on fuel elements, graphites and the fuel cycle. The investigations are primarily aimed at further developing the high-temperature reactor with a view to applications at elevated temperatures and including recent safety engineering data. It is chiefly intended in cooperation with industry to upgrade the HTR for the supply of reactor heat at a high temperature level. An important step on the road towards developing a nuclear process heat facility is the extended utilization of the AVR by adding a process heat loop of 25 MW_th. It opens up a low-cost and relatively short-term possibility of demonstrating the extraction and use of HTR heat for new low-pollution energy techniques and of testing the methods and equipment developed under the PMP project. The technical licensing requirements for conversion will be determined in 1984, a relevant design concept will be evolved and reliable cost estimates drawn up. This will provide the essential basis for a decision.
