Description
Biodosimetry has the potential to significantly change existing methods of radiation dose monitoring, not only in the workplace but also among the population. The overall aim of biological monitoring of radiation dose-whether for occupational or non occupational purposes- should be to promote health and safety. Biodosimetry based on cancer biomarkers is one way of quantifying the potency of an exposure, and of establishing intervention techniques to reduce the risk of cancer development. The use of cancer biomarkers in biodosimetry will permit the steps in radiation carcinogenesis to be explored and cancer risk to be estimated quantitatively. Furthermore, biodosimetry can be applied to risk assessment for an individual rather than a population. (author). 15 refs., 1 tab
