Electronuclear power on thorium-transuranium fuel cycle

Description

A subcritical reactor operating on fast neutrons is the basis for accelerator driven nuclear power. Neutron deficiency is supplemented by a powerful beam of protons accelerated to approximately 1 GeV. The hard neutron spectrum gives a possibility to use various fuel mixtures. Thorium has a very small cross-section of the fission reaction but 233U produced from 232Th has a fission ability comparable with 235U. As an original fuel material a mixture of thorium with plutonium is used, or a mixture thorium with transuraniums extracted from nuclear waste. Toxicity of the fuel waste based on thorium is low due to the fact that in the process of nuclear transformation, production of high actinides is not high,long-lived fission products transmutate during the course of fuel cycles
