The aim of this book is to provide the fundamental principles underlying the use of radiation as a therapeutic entity in the treatment of malignant disease. Although specific techniques are discussed at times throughout, not all units will follow exactly the same policy with regard to the techniques employed in the radiotherapeutic approach to treatment so that readers are advised to check on local policy with regard to the procedures employed. Throughout this book the female gender has been used to refer to nurses, and other health care practitioners, of both sexes and the male gender to describe the patient, unless specific examples require otherwise.
