The discovery of tumors of the thyroid in individuals 5 or more years after radiotherapy of the head, neck, or upper thorax or exposure to atom bomb irradiation or fallout led to the organization of a workshop by the National Cancer Institute, the Bureau of Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism, and Digestive Diseases.
