The extremely low dust content of blue compact galaxies: results of IRAS observations

Description
Far-infrared observations of three blue compact galaxies, Tololo 1924-414, Mkn 36 and IZw 18, are described. These galaxies, undergoing intense bursts of star formation, have low infrared luminosities. If the infrared luminosities are due to dust re-radiation, then the dust content of these galaxies is exceptionally low, perhaps because the galaxies are young and have not evolved sufficiently to build up the dust mass seen in normal galaxies.
