Possible measures for stimulating the elimination of radioactive strontium and cesium

This review presents therapeutic methods which have been tested in man and can be recommended for clinical use. Oral administration of adsorptive substances such as barium sulfate, aluminum phosphate or alginate proved effective as a first aid means to block intestinal *Sr absorption, while dilution therapy with stable calcium or strontium may stimulate *Sr excretion. Oral administration of ferrihexacyanoferrate (Prussian Blue) represents the treatment of choice after incorporation of *Cs. Practical recommendations for Germany are concerned with the choice of a suitable preparation and its dosage as well as with the indications for treatment. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

In der Uebersicht sind Methoden aufgefuehrt, die beim Menschen getestet und zur klinischen Anwendung empfohlen werden koennen. Orale Verabfolgung von adsorbierenden Substanzen wie Bariumsulfat, Aluminiumphosphat oder Alignat haben sich als Erste-Hilfe-Mittel zur Hemmung der *Sr-Resorption aus dem Darm bewaehrt, waehrend eine Verduennungstherapie mit stabilem Calcium oder Strontium die *Sr Ausscheidung stimulieren kann. Orale Verabfolgung von Ferrihexacyanoferrat (Berliner Blau) ist als Therapie der Wahl nach Inkorporation von *Cs anzusehen. Praktische Empfehlungen fuer die B.R.D. betreffen die Wahl eines geeigneten Praeparats und seine Dosierung sowie Indikationen zur Behandlung. (orig.)
