A simple model for predicting energy dissipation of thin plates being perforated by 'hard' missiles

Description

For the case of low velocity impact a simple model is derived for the determination of energy dissipation of thin plates being perforated by 'hard' missiles. The predicted residual energy of the missile having passed through the target is compared with test results. The tests were carried out with plates made of wood-chips (a rather homogeneous and cheap material). For a projectile with large diameter relative to the thickness of the target it is shown that the energy absorption of the plate is essentially influenced by the fracture type. (Auth.)
