Measurements of Neutron Flux by Activation for Calibrating a Film Badge

  • 1. Centro di Calculo del Comitato Nazionale per l'Energia Nucleare, Bologne (Italy)

Description

As the first step in the design of a film badge for thermal and epithermal neutrons, the authors calibrated fluxes of different composition, obtained from a radioactive source immersed in water. The neutron fluxes were evaluated on the basis of the activation of gold foils irradiated both with and without cladding so that the thermal and epithermal components could be distinguished. The measurements of the activity of the gold foils, made with a low-background gas-flow counter, were corrected by taking into account the effects of flux depression, self-shielding, self-absorption and back-scattering. After ascertaining the flux value, they began measurements to determine the effects due to activation of the Ag-Br contained in the Kodak photographic (''Radiation Monitoring'') emulsion. It is intended to compare the results obtained with the theoretical calculation. The final purpose of this study is to devise a system of shields for insertion in the badges to make the film response proportional to the dose due to either component of the neutron flux. (author)
