Development of a single-strip ion thruster

Description

Various basic studies of thruster components led to the design, development, and testing of a single strip engineering model having a thrust of 1,5 millinewtons. A survey of this model and the results of the characterisation test runs are presneted. The performance obtained are close to those of the project particularly for those concerning the thrust and the power dissipated by the ionizer. The total power consumption is slightly higher than anticipated, but a control of the temperature of the accelerating electrode, is expected to reduce the power consumption as is demonstrated by experiments. Since the actual characteristics well match the projected ones, the thruster is now ready underway for endurances tests and industrial development

Abstract (French)

Les diverses etudes de base sur les composants du propulseur ont ete concretisees par la conception, la realisation et l'essai d'un modele probatoire de type monofente, de 1,5 millinewtons de poussee. On presente, dans ses grandes lignes, ce modele puis les resultats des essais de caracterisation du prototype. Les performances obtenues sont proches des estimations, en particulier la poussee et la puissance dissipee par l'ioniseur. La consommation totale de puissance est legerement superieure a la valeur prevue mais doit pouvoir etre reduite grace a un controle de la temperature de l'electrode acceleratrice ainsi que le montrent des essais en cours. Le propulseur est maintenant pret a subir des tests d'endurance et a etre developpe industriellement
