Effect of complexing anions on sorption of uranium on silica

  • 1. Radiochemistry Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Sorption of U(VI) on silica colloids has been studied at varying pH values (3-8) in absence and presence of citrate and carbonate ions using 233U as a tracer. Sorption of U(VI) onto silica increases sharply with pH, reaching ∼ 100% at pH 4. In presence of citric acid (10-3M) U(VI) sorption on silica decreased significantly in the pH range 2-5, while carbonate ions (10-3M) have negligible effect on U(VI) sorption at least up to pH = 8. Surface Complexation modeling was used to elucidate the sorption mechanism. (author)
