Electronic structure of low-dimensional metals

Description

It is discussed in the paper how the signatures of Fermi liquid and non-Fermi behavior show up in the low-energy excitations and how these can be measured by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy. Data on the quasi-two-dimensional Fermi liquid reference compound TiTe2 reflect the energy renormalization and lifetime variation expected for quasiparticle excitations. In contrast, a breakdown of Fermi liquid behavior is observed in the one-dimensional systems (TaSe4)2I and K0.3Mo3, being due to the Peierls instability and the effect of fluctuating charge density waves. Spectra on the latter material additionally give possible evidence for Luttinger liquid behavior
