Neutronic study of accelerator-driven subcritical systems for transmutation

Description

A concept is proposed of accelerator-driven assembly with shell-shaped actinide target assuring a reduction of the beam current to a level achievable in isochronous cyclotrons at standard system power (1 GWel) and safe levels of keff. Such target allows for: keff-independent high neutron generation, large target volume /for heating mitigation/ at moderate neutron losses, more uniform neutron flux and power distribution, alleviating the cooling. The concept is proposed to be applied as Th-based symbiont incinerating external Pu and co-operating with a number of serviced LWRs. (author)
