Description
We report on the geometric phases a spin-1/2 system accumulates while a constant magnetic field traces out closed loops in three-dimensional space. Experimental results obtained for a ''figure-8'' loop by using a NMR gyroscope are compared to those of a circle and a spherical triangle. Zero geometric phase is expected for adiabatic figure-8 loops and indeed is observed. Deviations from this zero result appear for nonadiabatic conditions and are explained by an effective field model. (orig.)
