Quantitative determination of iron-55, nickel-59, and nickel-63 in reactor components

Description

When evaluating samples from reactor loops for the determination of contaminations by fission and activation products, long-lived γ-sources such as cobalt-60 and caesium-137, the quantitative determination is fairly easy. There are usually considerable quantities of contaminants in the reactor loops the analysis of which requires greater expenditure in work and money. Such contaminants are for instance the β-source nickel-63 and the corpuscular radiation source iron-55. We have developed methods for the determination of nickel-63 and iron-55. Results obtained from nuclear power plants and the comparison with activation calculations prove that these methods are applicable. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Bei der Auswertung von Proben aus Reaktorkreislaeufen zur Bestimmung der Kontamination durch Spalt- und Aktivierungsprodukte sind die langlebigen γ-Strahler, wie z.B. Co-60 oder Cs-137, relativ leicht quantitativ zu bestimmen. Normalerweise sind in den Kreislaeufen auch betraechtliche Mengen an Kontaminanten vorhanden, deren Analyse einen hoeheren Aufwand erfordert, wie z.B. der β-Strahler Ni-63 oder der K-Strahler Fe-55. Es wurden von uns Methoden zur Bestimmung von Ni-63 und Fe-55 entwickelt. Resultate aus Kernkraftwerken und deren Vergleich mit Aktivierungsrechnungen beweisen die Eignung dieser Methoden. (orig.)
