Effect of yttria additions on hot-pressed Si3N4

Creators

  • 1. Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, Watertown, MA

Description

Various grades of Si3N4 powder were hot pressed with Y2O3 additions of up to 20 wt percent. Effects of powder purity, percent addition, and testing temperature on resultant properties are discussed with supplemental evidence from crystallographic and Auger analyses. The highest elevated temperature strengths yet reported for Si3N4 were obtained with such additions, and significant potential is indicated for use in high temperature gas turbines. (auth)
