Laser microwelds of pairs of one-phase materials with high melting temperatures, SS-V and V-Nb

Description
Niobium caps have successfully been joined to small diameter stainless steel (type AISI 304) tubes via vanadium washers by means of an Nd-YAG laser. The seals are intended for use at temperatures up to 5700C, but they can easily be used at much higher temperatures in an appropriate environment. An optimum choice of welding parameters is crucial to the final result. The energy of each laser pulse was 0.7 J and the pulse duration was 1.5 ms for the welds between SS and V. The corresponding figures for the Nb-V welds were 2.5 J and 2.0 ms, respectively. During the welding operation we flushed with argon gas as protection against oxidation of the work pieces. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Wir haben erfolgreich Niob-Kappen unter Verwendung einer Vanadium Zwischenlage mit duennen Roehrchen aus rostfreiem Stahl (AISI 304) mit einem Nd-YAG Laser verschweisst. In kuenftigen Verwendungen werden die Schweissnaehte Temperaturen bis 5700C ausgesetzt werden. Sie koennen jedoch bei entsprechenden Umweltbedingungen wesentlich hoeheren Temperaturen ausgesetzt werden. Eine optimale Wahl der Schweissbedingungen ist Voraussetzung fuer ein gutes Resultat. Fuer die Verschweissung von Vanadium mit rostfreiem Stahl waren die Energie der Laserpulse 0,7 J und die Pulsdauer 1,5 ms. Die entsprechenden Werte fuer die Nb-V-Verschweissung betrugen 2,5 J und 2,0 ms. Als Schutzgas verwendeten wir Argon. (orig.)Additional details
