Description
As nuclear and fossil fuel power plants age, maintenance and operation issues pose a serious concern in terms of plant life extension. In fact, maintenance capability has been targeted as the main issue facing aging plants today. Welding--and particularly in situ weld repair--represents a field-ready process that allows utilities to avoid replacement of costly components and systems. Even when replacement is required, improved welding processes and approaches can increase component reliability. This report summarizes EPRI research into the development of new welding techniques and processes, responses to general utility weld-related issues, and guidelines for improvement in welding applications. Example topics include advanced welding materials, reconditioning methods, dissimilar metal welds, temperbead weld repair, and induction heating stress improvement. Each topic, described in full detail in an EPRI report, is summarized in this document to provide an overview of the results and pertinent technical justifications. Also included is insight into future EPRI activities in areas such as welding technology transfer, new welding technologies, and an assessment of welding economics to assist utilities with run, repair, retire decisions
