Vision sensation evoked by single electrons and muons

  • 1. Moskovskoe Vysshee Tekhnicheskoe Uchilishche (USSR)

Description

The limiting possibilities of human eyeability to detect single one-charge relativistic particles and estimation of eye epsilon effectiveness as a detector of such particles are investigated. Investigations have been conducted with particles of cosmic radiation in mountains at the height of 3250 m above sea level where the charged component comprises electrons (65%), muons (30%), protons (4%). A scintillation telescope consisting of 5 detectors has been the main part of the experimental facility. The conducted investigations have revealed that human eye can detect passage of single one-charge relativistic particles with the effectiveness of 1-8%
