Measurements on cluster beams

Description

Preliminary investigations of cluster beams prior to the development of an injection method of neutral particles into the electron ring accelerator have been conducted. This paper presents the design considerations and the results of high resolution density measurements and of measurements of the mean cluster size. Sharply confined cluster beams with particle densities ranging from 4 x 1011 cm-3 up to 6 x 1012 cm-3 have been produced by expanding CO2 or Argon gas through a conical nozzle. With an Argon beam mean cluster sizes of up to several thousand atoms have been observed. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Vor der Entwicklung einer Methode zum Einschuss von Neutralteilchen in den Elektronenringbeschleuniger wurden Vorversuche mit Clusterstrahlen durchgefuehrt. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt den Aufbau und gibt die Ergebnisse von Messungen hoher Aufloesungsdichte und von Messungen der mittleren Clustergroesse an. Scharf begrenzte Clusterstrahlen mit Teilchendichten von 4 x 1011 cm-3 bis 6 x 1012 cm-3 wurden durch Expansion von CO2 oder Argon aus einer konischen Duese erzielt. Bei Argonstrahlen wurde eine mittlere Clustergroesse bis zu mehreren tausend Atomen beobachtet. (orig./AK)
