Quantitative simultaneous determination some phenolic compounds by orthogonal signal correction partial least squares in real samples

Complete text of publication follows. Phenolic components belong to a class of chemicals polluting, easily absorbed by animals and humans through the skin and Mucous membranes (S. Canofeni, S. DiSario, J. Mela, R. Pilloton, Anal. Lett. 27 (1994) 1659-1669). A simple, rapid and reliable method for simultaneous determination of multi-component phenolic pollutants has been made. PLS modeling is a powerful multivariate statistical tool and can be performed with easily accessible statically software (D.M. Haaland, E.V. Thomas, Anal.Chem.60 (1988) 1193-1202). Pre-processing method scan be applied in such situations to enhance the relevant in formation to make resulting models simpler and easier to interpret. Wold et al (S. Wold, H. Antti, F. Lindgren, J. Ohman, Chemom. Intell. Lab. Syst. 44 (1998) 175-185) introduced orthogonal signal correction (OSC) as a pre-processing step that improves the calibration model by filtering strong structured (i.e. .systematic) variation in X that is not correlated to Y. We use orthogonal signal correction partial least squares (OSC-PLS) method and the data were processed. A mixture design for standards was used in the calibration step to build the orthogonal signal correction partial least squares model. The linear range varied between 0.94-75.20, 1.39-41.64 and 1.10-66.24 μg ml-1 of phenol (PH), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and hydroquinone (HQ), respectively. The cross validation method was used to select the number of factors. The principle component of PH, 4-NP and HQ with and without OSC were, 3, 3, 3 and 3, 4, .5, respectively. To check the accuracy of the proposed method a recovery study on real samples was carried out. The PRESS for PH, 4-NP and HQ with and without OSC were, 3.7608, 2.0331, 3.5863 and 4.8348, 2.4052, 3.9598, respectively The RMSEP for PH, 4-NP and HQ with and without OSC were, 0.7330, 0.5389, .0.7158 and 0.8311, 0.5862, .7521, respectively. The results show that proposed method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of PH, 4-NP and HQ in synthetic samples, waste water, river water and tap water.
