Description
The connection of an electromagnetic (EM) beam in vacuum with the one in the magnetized plasma is rigorously investigated using a complete orthonormal set of functions. Beam profiles in the plasma are explicitly determined. It is found that the EM beam shows an anomalous refraction at the boundary of vacuum and the plasma in some plasma parameter regions. The beam is refracted against Snell's law and this happens for the right- and the left-polarized waves and also for the extraordinary wave. It is shown that the contradiction can be resolved referring to Huygens' principle. Relevance of the anomaly to fusion experiments will be discussed. (author)
