Where from here with operational transients: A designer's point of view

This chapter discusses the efforts being expended to avoid transients and to minimize the consequences of such transients if they do occur. The development of improved emergency procedures, improved control room designs, improved operator aids, improved site emergency plans, and improved management and technical support for the operations staff are reviewed. Topics considered include preparation, execution, follow-up, computer-based operator ads, instrumentation improvements, and reactor simulators. The benefits to the utility expected from the described improvements include lower forced outage rates, higher availability, and decreased turnover of trained operations personnel
