Barents, White, and Azov sea bottom sediments: dynamics of radioactive contamination

Description

Relying on new data on the content of 137Cs radionuclide in bottom sediments of the Barents, White and Azov Seas, dynamics of their radioactive contamination was traced since 1980s. Essential (by an order of magnitude in some places) reduction in 137Cs concentration in bottom sediments of the seas in recent 10-20 years was pointed out. The levels observed in 2003 reflect the current radiation background stemming from global fallouts. Influence of the Chernobyl emission in the Azov Sea is still perceived, whereas the radioactive fallouts in the northern seas became actually imperceptible
