The gamma radiation modification of polymers at a contract radiation processing facility

  • 1. Iso-Ster (Pty.) Ltd., Kempton Park (South Africa)

Description

Polymers either cross-link or degrade under ionising radiations. Most polymers contain plasticizers, antioxidants, or stabilizers which influence their stability towards ionising radiations and radiation cross-linking. The effect of various agents on the cross-linking of polypropylene and polyethylene has been investigated. For comparison the effect of adding different types and quantities of cross-linking agents to commercial PVC were investigated. Irradiations were carried out at an industrial radiation facility, Iso-Ster, and gel content, tensile strength, elongation and hardness were measured. (UK)
