The origin of running penumbral waves

  • 1. Sussex Univ., Brighton (UK)

Description

Numerical experiments on axisymmetric convection with a magnetic field display solutions in which steady convection concentrates the field into a strong central rope. Subsequently, oscillations develop within the rope; this process models the formation of a sunspot with running penumbral waves. (author)
