Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility of metallic electrons: Application to cadmium

Description

The temperature dependence of the orbital, spin, and spin-orbit interaction contributions to the magnetic susceptibility of metallic electrons has been investigated in a pseudopotential formalism. It is noted that the orbital contribution shows negligible temperature dependence while the temperature dependence of spin and spin-orbit contributions is prominent. We note that heretofore no theoretical results existed from which the temperature-dependent susceptibility could be calculated. Our results for cadmium compare well with the available experimental results. We emphasize that the effect of the electron--phonon interaction is important for the calculation of the susceptibility of a superconducting metal like Cd at T = 0 0K
