Early results of radiation and combined therapy of patients with malignant tumors using metronidazole

Description
Immediate results of radio- and combined treatment of 138 cancer patients are presented. Using metronidazole, the radiosensitizer of hypoxic cells some schemes of administration were examined: per os, in an enema and combined at doses of 5 and 8 g/m2. The least toxicity with high concentrations of metronidazole in the blood was observed using combined administration of the drug. Four hrs. after administration the patients were irradiated at the peak of the content of the drug in the blood. Immediate results of radio- and combined therapy for esophageal, laryngeal, pharyngeal and cervical tumors were more favourable, for other tumor sites they were not less effective than in control groups
