/sub nThe results on the reactive scattering of B+(3P/sub u/) by D2 has been published and a corresponding study on the ground state (1S/sub g/) of B+ has been submitted for publication. The ionic aspect of the Br-ethane hot atom system is being investigated using beam techniques. It is found that there is no direct reaction of Br+ with ethane which can explain the thermal ionic yield of CH3Br reported by hot atom chemists for the Br-ethane hot atom system. Likewise, no satisfactory explanation exists for the dependence of the thermal ionic yield of CH3Br on moderator mole fraction. Studies of the collisions of Br+ with Kr (which is used as a moderator in hot atom systems) shows that ions such as BrKr+ are formed. Electron irradiation of CH3Br-Kr mixtures shows that CH3BrKr+ is formed in good yield. Electron irradiation of Br2-Kr mixtures shows that ions such as Br(Kr)/sub n/+ are formed. Such ions can be produced in the Kr moderated Br-ethane hot atom system and can explain the thermal ionic yield of CH3Br and its dependence on Kr pressure
