Estimation of radiation risk and its uncertainty

Description
Estimation of radiation health risk is used for developing radiation protection standard. Current dose limits for radiation protection are determined by radiation risk estimates and its acceptability in society. The risk estimate of radiation-induced cancer is based on the epidemiological studies of the atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The data on the atomic bomb survivors range in low dose but in high dose rate. Therefore, for radiation protection, dose and dose rate effectiveness factor (DDREF) is recommended for considering the effect of low dose and low dose rate. The ICRP estimates the DDREF to be 2. The choice of DDREF has the largest influence on uncertainty of the magnitude of the low-dose risk of cancer. (author)
