Radioactivity - what is it?

Description

Radioactivity is certainly not limited to hermetically sealed nuclear reactors or research laboratories. Radioactivity and radiation are a part of our daily life. The article is intended to explain basic terms of radioactivity, the sources of radioactive radiation and the dose rates emitted by them. The radiation from cosmic radiation and terrestrial radiation, the radiation doses in the vicinity of power stations and the genetically significant annual dose are specially described. (DG)

Abstract (German)

Radioaktivitaet ist keineswegs auf die hermetisch abgeschlossenen Kernreaktoren oder Forschungslaboratorien beschraenkt. Radioaktivitaet und Strahlung sind vielmehr ein Bestandteil unseres taeglichen Lebens. Der Beitrag soll Grundbegriffe der Radioaktivitaet wie auch die Quellen radioaktiver Strahlung und die von ihnen ausgehende Strahlenbelastung aufzeigen. Insbesondere wird die Strahlenbelastung durch Hoehenstrahlung und terrestrische Strahlung, die Strahlendosis in der Umgebung von Kraftwerken sowie die genetisch signifikante Jahresdosis beschrieben.
