Beryllium single crystals for neutron monochromators

  • 1. Max-Planck-Institut fuer Metallforschung, Stuttgart (Germany, F.R.). Inst. fuer Werkstoffwissenschaften

Description

Beryllium single crystals would be a great improvement in neutron monochromators for wavelengths in range of 0.7 to 3 A as compared with other materials presently in use. Fundamental evaluations show that in the case of beryllium in this wavelength band relatively small crystal thicknesses would be sufficient (< 10 mm) for optimum reflectivities. Results from single crystals of different purity and with copper additions indicate that sufficiently large crystals, with a uniform mosaic structure, could be produced. (author)
