Conditioning of thorium containing radioactive liquid waste using cement matrix

Description
The present manuscript describes the outcome of experimental studies performed to explore the feasibility of using cement as matrix for immobilization of radioactive waste containing thorium as major element among actinides, fission products like Cs and Sr and other elements such as F, Al and Na. Different aspects like characterization of waste, preparation of cement blocks with simulated and actual waste, evaluation of CWPs for compressive strength are addressed. Preliminary studies carried out in laboratory have shown that Ordinary Portland Cement is one of the candidate matrices, for immobilization of this type of waste yielding a product of acceptable quality in terms of leach rate and compressive strength.
