Magnetic circular dichroism of a CaF2: Tm2+ crystal in the region of vibronic f-f transitions

Description

The dichroism spectrum of the 2F5/2(Γ7)-2F7/2(Γ7) transition vibronic sideband in a CaF2:Tm2+ crystal is studied in a longitudinal magnetic field of 2.8 T. The selection rules for vibronic transitions between Zeeman components of electronic levels are analyzed using group theory. Approximations are found providing close fitting of the calculated and experimental spectra. The Γ4μ symmetry modes are shown to make a principal contribution to the vibronic spectrum. Spectral features due to modes of other symmetries are identified. 19 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab
