Regional Cooperation Africa Energy Initiatives and SE4ALL

Energy Resources in Africa are mainly from hydro, coal, geothermal, biomass, Natural gas, wind, solar and crude oil. 12% of the World's technically feasible hydropower potential is in Africa; 4% of the total coal in the World, with about 95% of these reserves concentrated in Southern Africa. Geothermal energy on the continent is estimated at over 15,000 MW, mostly concentrated in the Rift Valley countries. Huge variety of biomass resources, with the reserves of woody biomass alone estimated at over 70 billion tonnes. 8% of the total reserves of natural gas in the World, estimated at about 15 trillion cubic metres, with about 90% of this resource concentrated in Northern and Western Africa. crude oil reserves in Africa are estimated at over 130 billion barrels, about 9.5% of the world's reserves, with over 80% of this energy resource concentrated in Northern and Western Africa. Solar insolation is the highest in the world, all year around, and 1800 – 2850 kWh/m2. Wind: Mainly exploited along coastal areas, Northern Africa (5 – 8.5 m/s); Southern Africa (6 – 7 m/s). Nuclear: Reasonably assured resources: 663,400 tonnes, Mainly West and Southern Africa. NEPAD is the implementing body of the African Union Development' Programmes. NEPAD Strategy Regarding Nuclear Power in Africa is to Focus on building Soft Infrastructure (Human Capacity, Policies, regulations,---etc) and Assist African Countries to develop their national policy and regulatory framework for nuclear Power. They Form and Launch the Africa SE4ALL Coordination Hub. Three Documents were adopted by CEMA, Country Action Agenda; Africa Strategy for Decentralized Energy Systems and Policy Framework for sustainable Charcoal. Africa has made significant strides in following Regional Approach to solve its Energy Challenges and to build Soft Infrastructure is the way forward
